This is a list of OTAN open educational resources (or OER) on the California Adult Education Canvas Commons. This list will be updated as additional resources are added.

ESL/EL Civics/Citizenship

Putting English to Work 1 and 2 - This competency-based course emphasizes oral language in the development of communicative competence for non-English-speaking adults. Listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills are integrated and presented in everyday contexts. The content and instructional strategies of this course reflect the English-as-a-Second-Language Model Standards for Adult Education Programs. This course outline also contains instruction in the following areas relevant to Community-Based English Tutoring (CBET): The School Community, Curriculum and Standards, Parent/Teacher Communication, Home Learning Environment, and Tutoring Skills.
Advanced ESL - This course is designed for Intermediate High or Advanced English Language Learners. In this course, students will advance their ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using sentences with more complex grammatical structures. The course will increase their knowledge of geography, history, customs, and culture of the US. They will enhance their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through a variety of strategies that address different learning styles.
The Write Stuff - Intermediate High and Advanced ESL Writing Course. This is a writing course for Intermediate High and Advanced ESL students interested in improving their writing skills for career or college.

ABE/ASE/HSD/HSE

Personal Success through Writing - In this course we will begin with the basics of sentence and paragraph writing. We will then learn about and practice different types of writing including essays: narrative, descriptive, expository, persuasive, compare and contrast; and reports.
Success in School - This course will teach you skills that will help students succeed in school. They will learn how to set goals and use their personal learning style. They will learn how to study, take notes and take tests. They will also have an introduction into college enrollment.

Adults with Disabilities

Adults with Disabilities Resource - This module is meant to help you find information for Adults with Disabilities (AWD). You can peruse lesson plans, websites used for online as well as classroom learning, resources from OTAN, articles and videos to develop greater awareness, and basic information to get started or enhance your AWD teaching endeavor.

Templates and Other Canvas Resources

CA AdultEducation 2023 | Custom Template - This template provides you with the following sample components: Announcement, Syllabus Page, Canvas Overview and Resources Module (from Student Perspective), Welcome to Class Module (aka a "Getting Started" introductory Module), and within the Lesson Module, Overview and To Do List Content Page, Presentation Content Page, Group Discussion, Individual Assignment, Quiz, and Wrap-up and Looking Ahead Content Page. Each page provides you (the instructor) with guidelines/suggestions as to how to use the sample.
Canvas Teacher Training - The Canvas Teacher Training course has modules of content that will take users through everything they need to know about using Canvas at their institutions - no matter what grade or level. The course uses a combination of the Canvas Video Guides and Canvas Guides to teach the content.
Agency Admin Training - This course is a great for Canvas Root Account Administrators (Admins) and Sub-account Admins. As you progress through this course you will complete several modules to learn how to manage Canvas environments, settings and features.

2025 Teacher Hub - The Teacher Hub is a centralized resource designed to support educators in effectively using Canvas for instruction. This course provides essential tools, strategies, and templates to streamline lesson planning and enhance student engagement.
Administrator's Hub | Template - The Administrator’s Hub serves as a central space for school and district administrators to access essential resources, collaborate with peers, and engage in on-demand professional development. This course is designed to streamline communication, provide quick access to important documents and tools, and support leadership growth through shared learning opportunities.
Canvas in the Classroom
Mastery Paths in Canvas - Mastery Paths in Canvas allow you to: Customize student learning and experience. Differentiated assignments and activities. Required learning, optional learning, or student choice.
Integrating Google in Canvas - Course with examples and instructions on how to integrate Canvas with your Google Drive.
